I like your suggestion but I think any format that gives equal wait to PR and match wins will discourage too many players from participating, as it is too much of an advantage for the players with very low PR's.

I've heard this argument before but it sounds very strange to my ears coming from the chess world. By this argument, nobody would ever play chess.

This seems related to the other thread that Chiva started recently. I often disagree with Phil Simborg but in this case I think he's on the right track. There's a need to get away from the ROI mentality entirely, and embrace the notion that backgammon is a game of skill. Trying (as an organizer) to hedge your bets will just end up impeding that.
