While I agree with your objection to the idea of "people friendly" (what I consider friendly and what you do may be very different), I do not agree with one of your and Jason's comments.

Yes, the number of people who attend a tournament is somewhat of an indicator of what people think of the rules of the tournament and the way it is run, but there are so many other factors that determine whether a tournament is well-attended that is it difficult to draw conclusions just from attendance.

The number 1 people choose one tournament over another is how convenient the location is to where they live. Then comes many other factors such as the date, conflicts of other tournaments, prize money, rake, hospitality, attractiveness of the city and area, the hotel itself, and of course, whether or not I am lecturing. (I will not venture to say whether that is a plus or a minus attraction!)

I look at all the above, but to be honest, I also look at something many people don't even consider: the side events! I used to never miss a tournament if backgammon-to-lose was a side event. Now, for some reason, it is never offered, and it is my favorite game of backgammon. By the way, talk about a way to make the game more skillful--it's no wonder that when it was offered Nack Ballard was often the winner of the event.

(You play your first three rolls as poorly as you can imagine, then you turn the board around and try to win from there. You will not be able to rely on your reference positions to win...you had better use skill and creativity.)
