... says you should not hold up the tourney and make sure that play is enjoyable for your opponent. So if others take 5 minutes at most for a difficult play, say once or twice per match, there is your answer.

In general I'd take my clue from what others are doing and mimick that; simple and works in many cases and different cultural settings where rules may not be written out at all, or are incomplete.
