Nice post, Jake. I agree with basically everything you say. There's just one point I have a comment about.
For instance counting the pips, and then computing the match equities, and all the ramifications for 4- and possibly 8-games, in a race, for three or more consecutive moves, is not an example of "expertise."
I agree that it's not an example of expertise. But let me just say that when I'm at home playing against the computer, this is what I find myself doing fairly frequently. I intentionally turn off the pip count. I've made enough mistakes in the past counting pips and computing match equities that, given no time constraints, I feel the need to repeat the calculation just to be sure of myself, even if I just counted last turn and decided not to turn the cube. This is one reason why it takes me on average half an hour to play a seven-point match against the bot. Clearly, I need to increase the speed and accuracy of my calculations. But I just wanted to point out that this kind of time consumption isn't necessarily driven by indecisiveness or a desire to irritate the opponent, and it does reduce my cube error rate.
