In the first position, after busting the 6-point you'll be able to use 7s and 8s to replenish the 6 and 5 points from the midpoint without breaking it. Busting the 3-point instead means that you'll only have 10s and 11s available.

In the second position you don't have any spares on the midpoint and you'll have more rolls to cover one of the broken points from the 8-point if you bust with 3/2. However, put the 8-point's spare back on the midpoint and the 3/2 becomes a bad move again.
