A clock (lack of) story from this past weekend's CSI

I convinced a friend from the trading floor to come play the Limited (Beginners or Novice) Saturday at the CSI. This was his first tourney and while he's decent for a casual player, he's not too good to be a ringer in the Limited and this was his first T. We're similar people in many respects, same age, same job, same political views, etc, except that he's better looking than me.
Well he wins his first couple of matches (7 pts) and catches me in between my rds to complain that he hasn't played in a while and that the match he's waiting on has gone almost 3 hours while the two players do more goofing around than playing BG. At the time, an older player (guy was in his 60's I guess) comes up to us and also complains that he's only played one match (it was close to dinner hour) and has been waiting 3 hours for the slow match to finish. He was quite upset to put it mildly. I mentioned clocks to the both of them and both agreed that even this event would be better off clock mandatory!
Certainly some socializing is fun and OK and especially in the Limited is OK, but those two goofing players took things too far and at the expense of the rest of the field.
My friend said that he will be back to play again, likely Advanced (Intermediate) at Rory's in May. But the other guy, unless he's less pissed off now, may not be back from what he said. I'm certainly not recommending making beginners clocks mandatory, but here's a case where excessive delay caused by slow play of others may result in a player having such a bad experience that he doesn't return.
