Just so you know the format used last year in Denmark:
60 players entered, there were no entry and thus no prizepool, only a minor registration needed if you were not member of the organizing club.
All matches were played to 17 pts. Players then got 1 point for a win, 1 point for low PR, or 3 points for a sweep (win and low PR).
1st round:
Round Robin in 6 player pools. 10 pools. Players distributed evenly by strength (rating)
2 players advance from each pool.If a tiebreak is needed, low PR of the match of the two players in question wins.
2nd round (semi finals):
Round Robin, 5 pools of 4 players.
1 player advance from each pool.3rd round (finals):
Round Robin, 1 pool 5 players.-----
The tournament attracted a good mix of players, ranging from world class players (even though they didn't play for anything else than fame and glory) to intermediates (even though they knew they didn't stand a chance to win, and that their matches and PRs would be made public).
We saw error-rates between 2 and 15.
For the top-players, the tournament was seen as the ultimate test of skill - winning this would really be prestigious.
For the intermediates, the tournament was seen as an opportunity to measure their skill in a test with the best, and see how far they could take it - it was also viewed as a perfect learning experience.
The strong players dominated throughout the tournament, but a few players managed to really surprise positively. However, the final podium ended best of the best!
