Don't think of the decision as, "I have to keep two points and throw away a point so I should keep the best two points." Instead, think of it as, "I am making two points and slotting two other points; what combination of made and slotted points has the best future potential?" Viewed this way, of course you'd rather slot the 5pt rather than the 2pt.

This presumes, though, that you're likely to be able to remake the points that you've broken. That's not so easy in the second position, so the first way of thinking—that you're "throwing away" the 6pt by breaking it—is not so unreasonable.
