Joe Dwek in his classic 'Backgammon For Profit' (pp 10-11) addresses the point very well about maximising income in the long run, ie not losing a regular player.
"It is much wiser to lose some points back to your opponent, trimming the score down to a reasonable figure..."
He certainly didn't feel this was unethical.
There is a brilliant and very humorous little story there about Ted Bassett, and how he pretended, sauntering into the chilled atmosphere of the breakfast room the morning after a massive win, to have been so drunk that he wasn't sure if he owed any money!
Such far-sightedness though is not for everyone!
