Hustling

I don't see any difference between throwing a game and not beavering. In general I think either is OK. The only action which I see as clearly wrong is to deceive with the intention of convincing someone to raise the stakes. Obviously collusion with a third player is wrong as well.
Phil indirectly brings up another issue. Is it OK to "keep the chou stupid"? I've been in games (other than Chicago) where I have witnessed players doing this. For example, they will complement their opponent's blunders as a nice move. I would not criticize others for doing this. I won't engage in it myself. I view it as an honest trade to gamble with an equity edge in exchange for sharing knowledge. I have a lot of weaker players asking me to play all the time because they know I will always answer their questions to the best of my ability.
The best reason for being honest isn't ethics. It is self interest. Having a reputation for honesty is worth it.
