Swiss vs random draw

The the strategy of deliberately losing early in a Swiss tournament (the "Swiss Gambit") is well known, and has been used by chess hustlers from time immemorial. You try to weasel your way higher up in the final results by having easier pairings all the way through the tournament. This strategy is designed not for the grandmaster who is trying to win the tournament, but for the mediocre player who wants to do a bit better than expectation (and make a little money). for example: http://chess.stackexchange.com/questions/1112/what-merit-is-there-to-the-so-called-swiss-gambit
I'm not sure how well it works, but it certainly reflects the mindset I was describing: When a good player does well in a Swiss, he will naturally be happy that he has won, but will usually be unhappy with his pairing. In the random draw event, he will still he happy he won, and will, on average, have a neutral attitude towards his pairing.
