Gray Areas

Here’s another gray area for your consideration: The first time I ever used a clock was in a local tournament in Berkeley. I was pretty good managing my time, except for one thing. There were three times I offered a double, but forgot to punch the clock.
In one, my opponent simply pointed to the clock, so there was no problem.
In the other two, however, I believe my opponent’s were guilty of unethical, or if you prefer, unsportsmanlike behavior. In those cases both opponents feined deep concentration, apparently confounded by the difficult decision they faced. In reality it was all acting, and they were just taking advantage of a tyros error. As soon as I punched the clock (about two minutes later), the clouds of confusion evaporated.
Without saying aloud, “This is a tough decision. Let me take a moment,” these opponents both used body language to tell the exact same lie. Some will say I am wrong, but I see no distinction in this case between a direct verbal lie and a direct non-verbal lie. By their body language both opponents acknowledged that it was their turn.
Now, if the body language had said, “I am waiting because it is your turn,” I would not accuse these players of unethical conduct.
Like a said, here’s some gray.
