My guess is that back in the day, even experts just weren't as sensitive to the fact that putting the cube in the wrong location can wreak havoc with the checker-play decision. The fact that Snowie plays checkers cubelessly (note: this is not the same as playing for money) just reinforces this insensitivity. 16/11 is the right play in a cubeless game, and if you're writing a book where you're going to de-emphasize the cube, it's easy to get careless about where you put the cube in your diagram.
