This has to do more with the fact that you've made White's home board much stronger. White can make a solid 4-prime (and potentially a 6-prime, or at least a very strong 5-prime if he makes the bar) if you miss the blot on the 3 point rather than duplication.

Duplication is, in general, highly overrated.
