I would note that "dismissing everything but the race" strikes me as a fundamental misunderstanding of what I wrote.

In particular you should first ask what it is that you are trying to accomplish before you start counting a bunch of stuff.

7/2 is useful because it slots a key point, keeps the 16 point in case of disaster, turns 44 into an antijoker, and starts to prime the straggler on the 24 point. Also White's board is very important.
