First, what one person says means nothing. Second, I can certainly understand why a college student might make learning backgammon, or any complex game, a low priority until he has finished his education, established himself in a career, and has some spare time to take up a hobby.
I am sure the way you presented the game you explained that it was not a frivolous game of luck, but rather one of skill and mathematical calculations. That would mean a pretty serious time commitment for a college student. Except for a very few college students, not many can (or should) commit this kind of time and study to a game. I wonder how MCG's parents would think about the number of hours he spent studying backgammon and chess when he was in college? I know that I was addicted to contract bridge when I was in college, but there was not enough time to really perfect my skills because of all the handball I was playing.
