What Backgammon Needs to Thrive

I am all for clocks in all tournaments -- some players are interminably slow which really ruins the game. And it is generally the same players over and over again causing problems at the tournaments.
I played the Partouche Tour tourney in Cannes last year and all matches were on the clock -- I assume that is true of all their tourneys. The Monte Carlo tourney is not on clocks but the schedule is stretched out over a number of days. Partouche supplied all the clocks -- seems appropriate that all clocks would be the same at a given tourney, thereby precluding individually owned clocks.
The Indianapolis, now Madison, tournament has always been Swiss without clocks and has generally went off without scheduling hitches. Though there is the occasional late match -- despite 2.5 to 3 hours allotted for nine point matches. I had one go 3.5 hours a couple of years ago and I play fairly fast -- but I got a nap between every one of my plays waiting on the opponent.
