It's about the match score. John has given a good quantative analysis, here's a simpler version;
With the cube turned, you can't be cubed out, and gammon losses are irrelevant. This allows you to play on and take risks that you otherwise wouldn't.
If white wins with the cube at 2 then he gets to Crawford.
If white wins a doubled gammon, he wins the match.
All these point toward having an itchy trigger finger for the cube. No way this is a cube at a level score or for money, but when your opponent is 2 away you should be eager to cube.
