Opponent opens 62S
53P-51S-43
When your opponent opens with one of the 6x-splits, such as 62S above, it is a good roll when you reply with a hit. 6x or 1x, it does not matter which. Any hit is good. Interestingly, when the reply is 1x, specifically 21, 41, or 51, the best play is usually to hit and bring a builder down from the midpoint with the other die. With 6x, on the other hand, splitting the rear checkers after hitting usually beats playing down from the midpoint.
There are several reasons for the difference, the most important of which is that hitting with 1x leaves a stripped 8pt. Unstacking the midpoint with 1x is also a plus, but supporting the stripped 8pt is the paramount reason.
I think that is what is happening with 53P-51S-43. After making the 3pt on the first roll, the 8pt is stripped. For that reason, bringing down a builder in support is more important than it is in the second roll position 51S-43. This explains why U (Up) declines in equity relative to S (Split) and Z (Reverse split) in 53P-51S-43.

T (sTack/Tower) = 13/6, U (Up) = 24/21 24/20, X (Hit and split) = 24/21 6/2*,
Z (Reverse split) = 24/21 13/9Mike
