Clocks would surely make my tournament experience more enjoyable, although I'm not really that impatient. But do we really imagine that there are hundreds - or even dozens - of players out there who would be showing up to tournaments if only there were clocks? Is this really going to help backgammon to "thrive"?

I can imagine there might be a few disgruntled people who would be drawn back to tournaments by the prospect of clocks. That might be cancelled out by losing a few slow players who can't cope. But in any event, I don't see a big difference unless clocks somehow attract new players to tournaments. If anything, they probably have the opposite effect, discouraging people from entering the Open Division.

Maybe we're defining "thriving" differently. If what it means is simply making tournaments more enjoyable for the existing group of players, for however long they keep playing... then yeah, clocks are probably good.
