How do I arrive at the epc of 34 for blue?

By doing just what you're doing now, working with epc more often and logging reference positions in your head. I would have started the same as you, thinking of this as a rolls situation. You applied a rule as Koca mentioned I don't think should have been applied. I saw this as nearly a 5 roll position because you're so likely to miss either by rolling an immediate bad four or two aces before you are able to bear everyone off. (and perhaps other small oddities like a few too many twos) So I would have taken 7*5+1= epc of 36 and worked down from there. I would have ballparked in the end.
