I really like this idea. Once we truly have a good ranking and rating system that takes into account major tournament play as well as local club play and possibly on-line competition, I believe something like this would be fantastic for backgammon as well. In the meantime, the data is far too scattered and misleading and if we implemented a site today the ratings and rankings would be far from reflective of the true skills of the players.

Having said that, however, there is no reason not to have an international database of competitive backgammon players that includes their picture and a list of tournament results, Giant ranking (current or past), and a brief bio including where they live, what club they play in, what site they play on, and, if they want, an email address.

Now the question is, who pays for and maintains this information? The USBGF is the logical place for the US, and that could become another reason to join and benefit of joining. Each member can fill out a simple profile that they can update, and they can choose whether they want to be listed on the public list or not (as some may well wish to remain anonymous), and they can choose what information would be made public (such as email address or city).

Eventually, if other Federations around the world do the same, there could be a common, international database, and eventually, once we truly do have a standardized world-wide rating and ranking system, it could include that information as well.
