E.g. if "allowed" then ask opp if s/he would like to play the match with a clock

I believe the "allowed" clock rules allow one to insist, politely of course, that the match be clocked. Insist!

Feel free to add, expound, slam, whatever it is you humans do at this hour.

Ok. I think most of the suggestions -- clocks, tourney fees and added money, tourney format -- whatever their merit, miss the point. But "nicknames" comes close, and corporate sponsorship would certainly be a plus.

Backgammon can thrive where its organization and promotion present it as a pleasurable pasttime, give it a cachet of coolness, and attract a steady stream of new players.

Does your country of residence have a backgammon federation? a national championship? a ranking system? a magazine or other promotional outlet? events for the under twenty-one? any effort to reach out to college-aged and younger students? events for the novice and intermediate players, some of whom may one day join the open ranks? support for local club organizers, recruiters, and enthusiasts?

In one country, the best measurement of "thriving" was met, I think, in the years when 0.01% of the population could be found every Thursday night from October to February playing competitive backgammon for no stakes at all. In a country the size of the U.S.A., that would be ....... 300,000 regular players. Imagine that.
