What Backgammon Needs to Thrive

In Response To: What Backgammon Needs to Thrive (Stick)

A similar lament appeared maybe a year ago at GammonU. First, let's define the problem more narrowly: we need something to give a hand up to live backgammon. On-line seems to be doing OK but who wants to sit around all alone in front of their computer for hours on end, day after day? I know there are people making a living doing that, but I'm not envious!

1. Sponsorship would be a big help. The sponsoring company would then capitalize on their own generosity by talking about backgammon in their regular commercials, giving the game yet another boost.

2. Make it look more fun and glamorous. Gammonlife.com is trying to do that. We don't need to look formal or act overly perky, but please don't show up for the auction looking like an extra from Night of the Living Dead, even if you did chouette till 4 a.m. and haven't had your coffee yet.

4. Find some celebrities that play. Athletes and movie stars played years ago, do any of them still know how? Do any newer generation celebrites play?

5. Have backgammon become part of general game festivals, which tend to showcase Magic: the Gathering or D&D, WoW and their clones and imitators. Backgammon can compete with these games because it's cheaper than the former and requires less of a time commitment than the latter. These festivals attract young people, so it might help solve that problem too.
