In Response To: Chouette order rule - has anyone played this way? How common/uncommon is it? (Rod)

In the U.S. I have only seen two ways to play the rotation:

1. To retain the box, the box must beat the Captain (in our Chicago Chouette, he can keep the box if he ties the captain by settling for a wash);

2. To retain the box, the box must beat the Captain and make a profit (I have seen some that say that if you beat the Captain and break even you still lose the box).

In Chicago, we also have a rule that you cannot give away or take the box as by a reverse settlement (i.e. the box cannot agree to pay a point to the captain in return for retaining the box; if the box pays a point or more to the captain the captain gets the box, and if the settlement is a point or more to the box from the captain, the box retains the box.)

Now, it does get more complicated than that relative to the order when there are partners in the box. In Chicago, we play that if you become the partner of the box, if you keep the box and play through an entire rotation and then you lose, the box player goes to the bottom of the list but the box's partner becomes the Captain immediately. I have seen chouettes where both go to the bottom of the list regardless of how long they have been in the box, with the box partner going next to last and the box player going to the bottom.

All of this explains why it is necessary to have written rules and that they be give to or explained to new players or visitors to the game or city.
