Chouette order rule - has anyone played this way? How common/uncommon is it?

L.A. rules are as follows:
All players must use a cup and roll through a baffle box;
Non-consulting at all times;
Individual cubes;
Partners are optional with 6 players and mandatory with 7;
If a player wishes to join a 7-handed game, the game splits into 2 4-handed games, with the the last three in joining the new player;
When the box takes a partner, the next player in line is it and must accept or quit the chouette;
If the box is doubled by everyone at the same time, he must take enough cubes to at least break even and he must take the captain(in a 3-handed chouette, the box must take both or pass both);
If the box doubles all crew members at the same time and there is a lone taker, the passing crew members may offer extras. The lone taker then must make a decision to either pass the box's cube or take extras from each crew member that chooses to give one;
If the cubes are at the same level and the box doubles anybody, he must double the captain(autos are an artificial increase and are not counted in this calculation);
When the box loses, his partner becomes the captain;
If the captain loses, he goes to the bottom of the crew;
To retain the box you must win the game, if played to completion against anyone, or have the last active crew member pass your cube or make a negative settlement. Your net result for the game can not result in a loss;
If both the captain and the box lose the game, it is called a double-stand-up,with the box going to the bottom of the order, behind the captain.
If the box wins the game, but does not break even, he goes to the bottom of the order and next player in line behind the previous captain(who is now next to last in the order, ahead of the previous box)becomes the box and the player behind him becomes the captain;
The highest ranking crew member in the rotation that breaks even or better becomes the box when the box loses a game to anyone, that is played to completion, or when the game is ended by the box passing a cube, or making a negative settlement, offered by the last active crew member;
I am sure I have left a few rules off.
Most of the rules are designed to make if more fair for the weaker players.
There is one L.A. rule I would not mind seeing changed. Many of the better players would prefer to only have to beat the box or the captain to become, or retain, the box, because they think it benefits them. I tend to agree. Also, it can be frustrating to wait a long time to play and then, after having the box pass your cube, find yourself at the bottom of the order because the box went on to win the game against someone else.
