Exactly, couldn't agree more - I tried to convey the same point (by stating players would "soft roll" if there's a severe punishment for launching the dice off table.
Regarding the time extra to play with/without bafflebox, I suppose it depends hugely if you're playing cups AND bafflebox, or just bafflebox. And I guess it also varies a lot from player to player.
As I can see from the videos of the latest version of Phil's boxes, they are getting closer and closer towards the design I was aiming for in my own boxes and prototypes (I never got to produce them in a larger scale - Denmark is not really that "pro box" yet). That is, they roll "fast" with fewer and more vertical baffles, giving the dice a good shake from speed and impact - rather than having a lot of baffles turning the dice at slower speeds, which could turn out more predictable and thus more controllable.
Thus I feel that Phil's newest boxes can easily be played without cups, which is optimal for speedgammon. :-)
