There are probably only about 10 players in the world who play close to Neil's level of play, and though I believe Neil when he says his PR will probably be within 1 in speed gammon, I am pretty sure that would not be true of all the top players in the world...there are some who clearly would play worse (in my opinion). For one thing, there are some who have just played a lot more speed gammon and have more experience at it. For another, even amongst the top Giants, some are much faster than others at counting pips and not all keep a running count. And of course, some simply are slower thinkers when they have complicated cube and checker problems.

Neil, and I suspect David Wells and a few others are probably the exception at Speed Gammon...but I am sure in time we will have enough recorded matches to draw some better conclusions about this.

I think we might also find out, amongst players far worse than Neil, that some people's PR's might not be hurt at all by playing faster. It might be interesting if there are some people who actually play better--though I wouldn't be on this happening too much.

I can tell you that I have done some speed gammon practice on my own, and I clearly do play worse and missed some plays I am sure I would not have missed if I was not rushing. So I am sure my PR will suffer well over 1 PR (but don't tell anybody.)
