Any build of GNU .14 and later is the same AI and will work just fine. I have .15 installed on some, .16 on others. If you have a dual core CPU make sure you get the correct build to take advantage of it. I think both .15 & .16 do, but that's off the top of my head.

The odd/even effect is something that is sometimes bizarre. It analyses so fast on 2 ply there's no reason for analysis to use anything else. It's also impossible timewise to roll anything out on settings higher than 2 ply. (you can use 3 ply cube, which I think is more accurate in holding games, but I digress). Overall just use 2 ply ... I may try to hunt up the post that explains the odd/even effect but you can look at some positions yourself and get an idea what going on.
