The safe plays aren't that safe (five shots).

13/9*/7 (11 shots) is scary, but that applies to both sides. Blue wins more gammons taking this route.

One last point: how is blue going to win this game if s/he plays safe? Most likely be hitting a White shot, and quite possibly when White has the better board and return shots. Seems like if the likely game winning scenario is no better than what is available now, might as well go for it here where White's four back checker could lead to more G wins for Blue. Who's to say the later scenario will ever even present itself?
