Your opponent is always weaker than you in this scenario as it's not possible they're stronger than you, you're always the stronger player by far with the birdie in your ear.
Okay, consider you are playing God. (I hope, he plays BG perfectly.) So even with GNUBG you might be the weaker player. Okay, I admit, this is an unfair trick ;-)
But I think for a weaker player the answer is relatively easy. My advice for a weaker player would be to just play your best backgammon! For some positions it might be advisable to prefer a simple running move instead of something more complex. And perhaps you might handle the cube a bit more agressive. But overall, the weaker player should just concentrate on playing his best game.
