Thanks for all your replies. This comes very close to my thinking about this. If a move is "not my style" I better exercise until I can master this kind of position. Against a weaker opponent one might try to chose a move that leads into a more complex position. But as Neil poited out, that might have some negative aspects ... espcially if you find yourself back in a gammonish position. For cube handling probably more flexibility is required to adopt to your opponents strength.
