Reduced evaluations and GNUBG

GNUBG at one time had reduced evaluations on the last ply (as far back as the early 2000s). We had used 7 of 21 as well (changeable to approximately half), and chequer play suffered. The quality of the choices you make is a key factor. Eventually around 2004 the pruning code was added to the GNUBG code base. Since the pruning works on plies other than the last one and it didn't suffer the same degradation of the output, it was decided that we would using the pruning code (and pruning net)
The evaluation and pruning code were written to be used independently (you couldn't compile with both). Eventually the reduction code was removed from the source code entirely.
I believe that if one pulls out GNUBG 0.14.3 source code (from CVS) you can build it with the define REDUCTION_CODE set and have it function. Later versions may no longer have compiled properly (although the code cold still be turned on at compile time).
I do not recall off the top of my head as to the mechanism that was used to make the choices.
