I have a viewpoint that certain rules should carry PUNITIVE penalties for violation. I think the new premature roll rule is fantastic, because in many circumstances, rolling prematurely can really cost you. If that's the price the backgammon community has to pay to teach people not to roll early, then that's great.

The reason I believe a punitive penalty is appropriate is that it should be generally acknowledged that premature rolling is simply rude. Anything we can do to stamp out that behavior is best. In fact, I think it would be even better to go so far as to say that if your opponent rolls prematurely, you have the option of either accepting the premature roll (and playing with foreknowledge of said roll), or requiring the opponent to re-roll.

With that in mind, I would LIKE the ruling to be that if you snatch up your dice (before they land), your opponent should be allowed to call your roll AND play with foreknowledge of said roll. Because that penalty is probably pretty stiff, I might like to only implement that after a warning.
