Count the number of losers... thats how many games need to be played.

Since 1 person wins the tournament, the rest have to lose. If 637 entered, there will be 636 games (if you don't count a bye as a game).

If you do count the bye as a game, you need to find the bracket that will be closest to the number of players you have. 2^n where n is an integer will give you a bracket size, so 2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512,1024... If you have 637, you'd need a 1024 man bracket and there would be 1023 "games" including byes.
