What do you think of this?

First thing I think is that your math is off? 7ppl entered every side pool, 7x175 = $1225, payouts of 675/375 =$1050, since the directors didn't take any money from the entry fee according to your figures, I'm assuming they didn't take from the side pool either? Anyway...a floating $175 isn't the issue.
This could happen, this could easily happen, and the director or other participants wouldn't know anything about it. The only hitch is when Player A comes up with the idea and approaches Player B about it he'd better have a damn good idea Player B is a bit on the shady side and will go for the deal. If so, they could simply play the match and B can toss the match easily. Don't think it's that easy? Set it up, play either bot on 1ply a match to 7, you'll see how many decisions can be skewed and nobody would be the wiser.
If you find that too hard imagine playing a match that possibly isn't being watched all the time. I realize it's the finals and it will probably be heavily watched, but initially, when you go set up in your little corner there will be nobody there for a couple of minutes, how easy is it to start the "winner" ahead 4-0, oops, he won a G the first game on a 2 cube. Mark it on the scoreboard and from there it's smooth sailing...
I don't believe, or hope there aren't, that many Open level players who would agree to a deal like this, I think that's what keeps the integrity of the game in place. I think, though haven't analyzed, that there are many parts that in theory could be taken advantage of in the calcutta, side pool, winner/loser system.
