For a roll of doublets, when all four die movements land in the outer board, a play is nactated in the D (Down) family. In the position 62S-44B-11, the D family has three members. At the top of the family are the plays that switch from the 8pt to the 7pt. The third-ranked play keeps the 8pt.
D = 11/9, 8/7(2)
d = 11/10, 8/7(3)
D = 11/7For a roll of doublets, the Z family is defined as follows.
- One die is played on the far side of the board, including entering a checker from the bar.
- Three dice are played down (i.e., to or within the outer board).
If there is more than one member in the Z family, use the Hit-More-6 rule to to rank them. See the Nactation Tutorial or my post Clarifying S (Split), Z (Reverse split), and B (Both) for more information and examples.
In the position 62S-44B-11, the Z family has four members, all of which begin by playing 24/23. Since there is no way to add a point in the outer board, the moves that switch points, from the 8pt to the 7pt, rank at the top of the family. Landing a blot on the 10pt beats moving a spare to the newly made 7pt.
Z = 24/23, 11/10, 8/7(2)
z = 24/23, 8/7(3)The third- and fourth-ranked moves both keep the 8pt. They also share three die movements: 24/23, 11/10, and 10/9. The fourth die is the decider: by the wrinkle in the 6pt Convention, 9/8 beats 8/7. In the outer board, adding a spare to the 8pt outranks moving a blot to the 7pt.
Z = 24/23, 11/8
z = 24/23, 11/9, 8/7Mike
