In chess, a 14-year-old prodigy can sit down with someone twice his age, clearly outplay him, and win the game. Instant gratification. This is a huge motivator for the prodigy to go home and study even harder.
You don't get the same thing in backgammon. Sure, a 14-year-old could beat his adult opponent in a game, or even a match, but that doesn't prove anything. Both players probably feel they outplayed their opponent and the only way to know for sure is to later feed the game into a bot. Yes, there is some satisfaction in grinding out a low ER, but it is not the same thing as standing up at the end of a game, the clear winner, and being congratulated by everyone who is watching.
