I disagree with the premise that a young kid who beats a good adult at a tournament will not be congratulated by those who are watching.
In backgammon I think it would be more of an encouraging type of congratulations rather than a sincere sign of respect. The assumption would be that he won because of luck.
If the kid feels [he outplayed his opponent] how does winning not allow him a sense of gratification?
I think it is harder to tell if you are outplaying your opponent in backgammon than in chess or go. (Maybe players of those other games could comment.) Even if you are correct in your feeling that you played better, the sense is not as strong. (And that's if you win. If you lose, it's even harder.)
