The practical error may not have been that large, but the logical error was huge. If you have a choice of two plays in a bear-off in backgammon and Play A gives your opponent a 3% chance to win and Play B gives your opponent a 5% chance to win, it would be a serious error to make play B, even though the practical consequences would not be that great.
