'Does making occasional bad choices mean being less predictable and hence more difficult to defend against?'
Good point. It is important to not be too predictable in play calling in football, like it is many other sports and games. In many cases it is right to throw in an unconventional play call to keep the defense honest in the future. Although, in this situation, it was fine if the other team knew exactly what you were going to do. The most important thing was to use time on the clock. It would have been better if the the quarterback knelt down (gave up any chance of gaining yards),just to burn time off the clock, rather than attempt a risky pass that would use little time on the clock and could be intercepted.
