Yes, I haven't been to many live tournaments so far, but this one was definitely by far the best. They really set the bar very high for tournament organizers.

Having said that, there's one very important thing they got wrong and I think they really need to get it right next time.

I'm talking about the format. I definitely think that double elimination is the perfect system for backgammon tournaments, but it has to done properly.

My expectation is that matches in the winners bracket should be at least as important as those in the fighters bracket. In fact, in standard double elimination, all matches starting with 2nd round in the winners bracket are worth 2 matches in the fighters bracket.

In Merit it was the other way around. I won 2 matches in the winners bracket, then lost in 3rd round, and then proceeded to win 5 matches in the fighters bracket. Had I lost in 1st round, I would only need to win 6 matches to be in the same place.

I talked to Arda a little bit, and he told me that they did it because they wanted to make quarter finals more important. I'm sure they their reasons, but whatever reasons they had, it's just not fair.
