Usually a progressive consolation is too progressive. That was also the case here.

I discussed the format with a couple of fellow Danes whom I was travelling with, and we reckon that a fair, simple format would be the following:

In order to make all matches equally important use triple elimination with random draw for each round, with the exception that you can't meet a player you have already played (until it can't be avoided towards the end of the tournament).

When you suffer your third loss you're out.

Draws for the first 3 rounds can be made as soon as the participants are known in order for 2nd and 3rd round matches to start up as soon as players are ready.

This way everybody have the same conditions and we're sure that the winner is the player with the best record.

Depending on the results this format may be time consuming but in a tournament such as the Merit Park&Casino tournament, there would easily be sufficient time to play the required number of rounds.

Personally, I think the biggest area of improvement is the schedule. On the first day matches didn't start until 22 o'clock. That is simply way too late to start. It seemed like the vast majority of the players arrived the day before so there was a lot of waiting time on day 1. Yes, we could (and did) play jackpots and warm up while waiting for the real thing. But why not just kick off things at 12 on the first day. Then we wouldn't have had to play until 3am. On the following days play should start no later than 12 (if you can't get up and be ready to play at 12 in the very hotel you're staying in, then it's your own fault).

Apart from these minor schedule issues it was a perfect tournament! I will wholeheartedly recommend it to any player. (already 2 more Cyprus tourneys scheduled, 1 in March and 1 in Nov).
