Niuniuch: I can't agree that progressive consolation was too progressive here. Actually it was counter-progressive, because matches in the fighters bracket were more important than matches in the main.
Christian: The winner, Katzios, ended up with a perfect 8-0 record so he obviously deserved to win. However, if he had lost the last match to Henrik Veje who came from the fighters' bracket, then he would have had a 7-1 record. If Henrik Veje had won that match he would have lost 1 match too but he would have won several more matches than 7(I'm not even sure how many he had to win to fight his way back). I think Henrik won 10 matches.
It seems to me that the format should strive to ensure that if the winner of the fighters' bracket ends up beating the winner of the winners' bracket, then the players should have equal records. Then they can play an extra match to settle the matter. That would be more fair. It really shouldn't matter so much when you encounter your first loss. To me that is a huge drawback to standard double elimination formats and progressive consolations.
