Book Publishing / IDs / QR Codes

I only got to thinking about getting positions into smartphones as of late with Frank releasing a new version of BGBlitz (not sure about the next Blitz2go version), Backgammon NJ putting analysis features in its product offering and of course XG Mobile.
In the past if you couldn't analyse or use the position right away for some useful purpose then I don't think there was much merit in even bothering.
I know someone else is likely going to point this out, so I may as well mention it. QR Codes are easily scanned and there are tools that help scan/manipulate them which makes them convenient for developers. QR codes will take space in a printed book and if you have to minimize cost it might not be the best approach.
Which bring me to the last idea. I think among the Backgammon tech community there has been a consensus that analysing video streams without structure looking for board state (automatically convert video to an importable format by bots) is not always an easy task but not impossible. I doubt many would argue that if BG positions in printed books were done in a standardized way the analysis of a picture with chequers (including stacked ones) / dice / doubling cube / score would probably not be as difficult (compared to non standard board conventions or processing live streams) for even a smart phone app.
If one were skip the QR code route, maybe some thought about a standard for printed positions that make it easier for computers to scan directly and convert it to a more usable digital form.
