Inner Board Double Hit

Inner board double-hits usually come about due to lack of a 'normal' move elsewhere, and so they are basically tempo hits in order that your position 'regains its balance'. You can't move your back men, and your midpoint is stripped, so you're going to become badly disconnected (and leaving a blot anyway), so you will hand the initiative to your opponent on a plate unless you tempo hit to some extent. And with an otherwise very awkward roll like this 5-4, the alternatives can sometimes be so bad that the extra tempo from the double hit can be needed to allow you fend off a likely very ugly position. You could have a decent upside if it goes well, with nothing too terrible (compared to drastically losing the initiative) if it doesn't produce an immediate blitz (albeit a weak, 'tempo blitz') for you. The double inner hit is a very useful 'last resort' type of play in lieu of anything else - you just need to keep on your toes to see when this type of play is available as and when appropriate, as it is here.
