Inner Board Double Hit

In Response To: Inner Board Double Hit (AP)

Over the board, my approach would be this:

First, I would reject playing two down from the midpoint. It would divide my forces. It would also leave a blot on the 9pt point in direct range of the opponent. I would take a longer look if both checkers from the midpoint had safe landing spaces in the outer board.

Somewhat unconsciously, my next decision would be to hold onto the bar point. Obviously, it could be broken in order to make either the 2pt or 3pt, but since neither hits, I would rather keep the bar point. Of course, if there were a POH play that involved breaking the bar point, it would probably be the best play for this position.

That leaves hitting from the 8pt. I would process all of the foregoing and commit to that hit in about two seconds. The only semi-difficult decision would be how to play the 5. Having chosen to hit once, however, it quickly becomes clear that the second hit is appropriate as a tempo hit. I don't really expect to get away with the double hit, but I am hoping that if the blot on the 4pt survives, I will be better off than I would have been with any other play. And who knows? Missing a double shot is the easiest thing in the world.

As you can see, my OTB approach in this position works by process of elimination. It has merit, but I think both Casper and Adam have done a better job explaining the theory.
