Another teaching rhyme

When there are 3 checkers on the 8pt, it is sometimes better to make the 3pt than the 5pt. The blot you would leave behind if you made the 5pt is a big part of the reason. In this position, my first choice is to make the 5pt.

Next, is the question of advancing the anchor. In many cases, that is part of how an early 33 is played. With a blot on the 22pt, however, the rear checkers are already—in effect—“split.” Blue already has a double-indirect at any blots that show up in the outer board. The same split also increases his opportunities to advance his anchor on a future turn.

I think the immediate advantage given by making a three-point board outweighs the gain of making an advanced anchor. Making the 3pt creates a threatening board and smooths out the stripped and stacked front structure Blue has at present.

A (Attack) = 8/5(2), 6/3(2)
