Hit and slot the 3. As Matt explained to me, the idea is to get hit and anchor and maybe win from there later, or with the anchor avoid a gammon. I played not to get hit again....I gave up on this game and thought I might avoid a gammon if I just don't get hit again and bring my checkers around. The right concept of play did not even occur to me.
