As many know there used to be (but not sure about it anymore on GridGammon) a bot on GameGrid called GGRaccoon which (I'm pretty sure) was GNU-bg 0-ply. Lots of people used to play it and get frustrated as hell losing to it. (Of course some said it cheated....) It was super-fast (not surprising with no lookahead). I'm pretty sure a big chunk of its extra advantage was exactly as you indicate -- players getting into auto-pilot subconsciously trying to keep up with the bot.
